Opera Biography

Since making his opera conducting debut with Rigoletto, John has conducted many operas for several different companies throughout the UK, USA and in Europe. He is currently Musical Director for Swansea City Opera, a role he previously held in 2007-2008, and he has also held Musical Directorships for Pimlico Opera (2005-2007) and for Opera Box (2007). John has worked on the music staff for Icelandic National Opera, UCL Opera and Grange Park Opera and he has conducted for several other companies including London City Opera, Crystal Clear Opera, St Albans Chamber Opera and British Youth Opera.

In Iceland John began his professional opera career as Assistant Conductor and chief Répétiteur for Icelandic National Opera's 1997 production of The Merry Widow and, later that year, accompanied the Opera Chorus on a concert tour of Italy. He conducted The Magic Flute and Carmen on extensive tours of the USA for London City Opera in association with Columbia Artists (in 2000 and 2001 respectively) and for the same company conducted Madame Butterfly in Paris in 2000.

Closer to home, John has toured extensively throughout the UK for Opera Box (The Marriage of Figaro, 2003; Carmen, 2003; La Bohème, 2007; and The Barber of Seville, 2007) and Pimlico Opera (Così Fan Tutte, 2004; The Elixir of Love, 2005; and The Barber of Seville, 2006). His long association with Swansea City Opera has seen him conduct productions of The Marriage of Figaro (2014), Don Pasquale (2013), Cosi fan Tutte (2012 & 2005), The Magic Flute (2007-8) and The Daughter of the Regiment (2006); in 2015 he will once again be at the musical helm for the company's 10th anniversary tour which will feature a new production of Gounod's Faust.

John has also conducted for several other companies including British Youth Opera (The Yeomen of the Guard, 2001), Crystal Clear Opera (La Traviata, 2002; and Madame Butterfly, 2002), Oxford Touring Opera (Un Ballo in Maschera, 2004) and Opera Anywhere (Gianni Schicchi, 2005).
